Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a warning regarding potential supply challenges for drones this winter, highlighting the country’s substantial budget deficit as a key factor. Zelensky noted that Ukraine is grappling with a $27 billion budget gap, much of which is tied to defense expenditures, including the production of drones and missiles.
The president emphasized the urgency of securing funding for defense production in the coming months, as delays in ordering and paying for drones during October and November could lead to supply issues in January and February. He pointed out that approximately one-third of the budget deficit could be required to meet drone needs for the first quarter of the year.
In response to these challenges, Ukraine has been in discussions with the European Union, the International Monetary Fund, and various businesses and financial institutions to address its financing needs. Zelensky stated that international partners understand the importance of supporting Ukraine’s domestic production of drones and missiles to help bridge the funding shortfall.
Furthermore, Ukraine is seeking additional funding through agreements with international partners aimed at enhancing drone cooperation. This initiative includes sharing Ukraine’s expertise in unmanned systems while boosting joint production and technological collaboration.
Zelensky’s warning underscores the critical role of international financial support in maintaining Ukraine’s defense capabilities, particularly as the country navigates its significant budget deficit and the ongoing need for military resources.
