Hubert Hurkacz has advanced to the final of the Chengdu Open, marking his first ATP Tour final appearance this season. The Polish tennis player achieved this milestone by overcoming a challenging match against Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the semifinals on Monday. Hurkacz bounced back after dropping the first set in a tiebreak, ultimately securing a 6-7(8-10), 6-3, 6-3 victory.
The 29-year-old Hurkacz will now face Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final. Davidovich Fokina reached the final after defeating Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the other semifinal. This upcoming match will be Hurkacz’s 13th career ATP Tour final, and his first since participating in the Geneva tournament in May 2025.
This season has proven challenging for Hurkacz, as he has dealt with injuries that have impacted his performance and led to a significant drop in his world ranking. He returned to the tour in January after a long-term injury layoff, and the Chengdu Open final represents a significant opportunity for him to claim his first ATP title since his comeback.
Hurkacz, who was once ranked as high as world No. 9, will be looking to improve his record against Davidovich Fokina, against whom he currently trails 2-4 in their previous encounters.
