In a significant educational policy change, Polish President Karol Nawrocki has enacted an amendment to the Education Law that will impose a nationwide ban on the use of mobile phones and other communication-capable electronic devices in schools and kindergartens. This new regulation is set to come into effect on September 1, 2026.
The legislation targets students in both public and private primary schools, restricting the use of these devices during lessons, breaks, and any school-related activities, which also include off-campus educational programs. Additionally, the amendment extends to preschool children, who will no longer be allowed to bring or use such devices during educational and care activities.
However, the law does provide certain exemptions. Students may still use electronic devices for specific classroom learning activities, assessments, and in emergency situations. Furthermore, allowances are made for parental contact and for students who require electronic devices due to medical conditions, disabilities, or other special educational needs, provided they have approval from school authorities.
This move by the Polish government underscores a growing trend towards limiting screen time and ensuring that the educational environment remains focused on learning without the distractions of modern communication technology. The regulation aims to foster better concentration and interpersonal interactions among students during school hours.
