Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stark warning about a looming large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine’s energy and logistics infrastructure, as detected by Ukrainian intelligence. The warning comes amid concerns that Russia might exploit global distractions, such as the US midterm elections, to intensify its military operations.
In his address on November 2, Zelensky highlighted Ukraine’s dire need for air defense interceptors, including Patriot missiles, as the country braces for winter. He called on the United States and its allies to exert more pressure on Moscow by targeting Russia’s oil and gas revenues, which could significantly impact its ability to fund the war effort.
This alert follows a deadly Russian strike on a school in Komyshuvakha, in the Zaporizhzhia region, which was being used to distribute humanitarian aid and shelter civilians. The attack resulted in at least 26 fatalities, including emergency workers and police officers, with rescue operations still ongoing.
The recent attack occurred shortly after a temporary humanitarian ceasefire in the Kherson region ended on November 1. The ceasefire had allowed for the evacuation of civilians from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky. However, attempts to extend the truce were unsuccessful, leading to renewed hostilities.
Despite the escalating violence, diplomatic efforts continue. Ukrainian, Russian, and US officials are scheduled to hold another round of US-mediated peace negotiations in Abu Dhabi on November 10–11. The talks are expected to address de-escalation, humanitarian assistance, and post-war security arrangements.
Zelensky also accused Russia of intensifying its attacks on Ukraine’s electricity distribution networks, complicating repair efforts. He emphasized that protecting critical infrastructure will remain a priority throughout the winter, as energy workers persistently strive to restore power supplies.
