Zelensky Thanks US for Starlink Restoration, Urges Prompt Air Defense Aid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed gratitude to the United States for restoring Starlink and Starshield satellite internet services, which he emphasized are crucial for Ukraine’s frontline logistics and defense against Russian drone attacks. However, Zelensky reiterated the urgent need for the delivery of promised air defense missiles, particularly ammunition for Patriot systems, to protect Ukrainian cities and infrastructure from Russian missile threats.

In a video address, Zelensky highlighted that Ukraine is still awaiting military shipments not only from the United States but also from European partners, despite earlier political commitments. The urgency of receiving these defense systems was underscored by the ongoing missile threats from Russia, which pose significant risks to civilian areas and critical infrastructure.

Beyond military concerns, Zelensky expressed hope for a humanitarian operation in Oleshky, a town in the Russian-controlled part of Ukraine’s Kherson region. This operation, following U.S.-mediated efforts to establish a local ceasefire, aims to deliver essential food and medical supplies to civilians and potentially allow people to leave the conflict zone.

The proposed humanitarian mission involves creating a safe corridor through mine-clearing efforts, a challenging task given the heavily mined roads in the area. Zelensky noted that Ukraine is prepared to cooperate in this initiative and voiced optimism that U.S. mediation could facilitate its success, thereby alleviating the difficult situation faced by civilians in Oleshky.
