During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent visit to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a commitment to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities, particularly focusing on air defense and drones. Canada pledged C$350 million (US$253 million) as part of a US-led initiative to supply Ukraine with military equipment, training, and other defense-related assistance. This support is crucial as Ukraine confronts an escalation in missile and drone attacks from Russia.
In addition to military aid, Canada is extending C$450 million in loan guarantees to help reinforce Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This financial backing aims to facilitate the repair of damaged facilities, enhance energy storage, and ensure a steady electricity supply for vital services, such as hospitals. These efforts underscore Canada’s commitment to aiding Ukraine in maintaining critical infrastructure amid ongoing conflict.
Carney and Zelenskyy also took steps towards cementing a long-term alliance by signing a pact to develop a “hundred-year partnership.” This agreement covers a range of sectors including defense, critical minerals, and energy, aiming to deepen collaboration between the two nations over the next century.
Furthermore, Canada has committed to directing 30% of its new domestic drone production to Ukraine. President Zelenskyy highlighted the strategic importance of these drones, noting their role on the battlefield in supporting Ukrainian forces and safeguarding civilians from escalating threats.
Looking ahead, President Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump in New York later this month. This meeting is anticipated to take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, as international efforts to reignite peace negotiations continue.
