Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed a proposal by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a direct meeting intended to progress peace negotiations, stating that he sees “no point” in face-to-face discussions at this point. This announcement came during Putin’s address at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where he rejected Zelenskyy’s suggestion of meeting in a neutral location such as Switzerland or Turkey. Zelenskyy had proposed initiating diplomatic talks from the current frontlines and implementing a full ceasefire during these discussions.

Putin reiterated that Russia’s objectives in the ongoing conflict remain unchanged, noting that Russian forces have control over the entire Luhansk region and a significant portion of the Donetsk region. He also restated Moscow’s demands for Ukraine to surrender control over the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. In response to Putin’s stance, Zelenskyy criticized the Kremlin for opting to prolong the conflict instead of seeking a diplomatic resolution, asserting that Russia’s rejection of the meeting proposal indicates a lack of willingness to end the war.

Amidst these diplomatic tensions, Ukraine has escalated its attacks on Russian military and energy targets. Recent operations have included drone strikes on ports, cargo ships, and fuel facilities. While Russia acknowledged these recent attacks, it has announced plans to bolster its air defense systems in light of the ongoing hostilities.

In addition to addressing the military aspects, Putin also defended Russia’s economic status in the face of criticism regarding the war’s impact and international sanctions. He argued that Russia’s economy remains robust, despite the financial pressures and restrictions imposed by Western nations. This statement underscores Russia’s stance of resilience against the economic challenges posed by the ongoing conflict and the global response to it.
